Doppelpass – Theatre Cooperation Fund

Cooperation between independent groups and standing performing arts theatres

With the Doppelpass Fund, the Federal Cultural Foundation hopes to promote cooperation between independent groups and standing theatres of dance and dramatic arts. The Foundation’s goal is to encourage Germany’s theatre and dance artists from both the independent scene and the theatre establishment to work together and explore new forms of artistic production. The goal of the Doppelpass fund is to offer independent groups an opportunity to benefit from the structures and capacity of established theatres, while at the same time, offer artists at the theatres a chance to observe these groups at work and apply their methods in an artistically productive manner.

Both parties would benefit greatly from such cooperation. The theatres would allow independent groups to stage more performances and offer them an advantageous infrastructure with organizational and artistic competence. By cooperating with these independent groups, the established theatres would gain access to innovative forms of expression, working methods and thematic areas which could provide fresh impulses to their own work. In 2014 the programme extended funding to independent groups in all artistic areas. Independent music groups, for example, or existing groups of video, sound and performance artists can now receive funding to create a partnership with a state or municipal theatre.

The central component of the Doppelpass Fund is a two-year residency programme. The programme will finance partnerships between established theatres and independent groups which have an equal say in their artistic collaboration. The partners engage in collaboration for a period of two theatre seasons. Independent groups can take residency at the theatres in blocks of time and need not be present on location during the entire year. Both partners should have the opportunity to carry out projects during the residency period. In order to increase the number of performances of completed productions, funding can be used to finance guest performances from current partnerships.

The Doppelpass Fund is the latest in a series of structural funding programmes, initiated by the Federal Cultural Foundation since 2005, to strengthen the viability of the German theatre landscape. The first programme, the Home Game Fund, encouraged theatres to intensively address the social realities in their home cities and regions. In 2008, the Foundation established the Wanderlust Fund which allowed participating theatres to engage in three-year international theatre partnerships. The Federal Cultural Foundation launched the Doppelpass Fund in 2011 with the explicit goal of promoting Germany’s vibrant independent scene.
