Crossing Borders – From Lake to Lake
A joint programme by the Theater Konstanz and Nanzikambe Arts, Blantyre (Malawi) - supported by the Wanderlust Fund
Despite all their cultural, social and economic differences, the city of Constance and Blantyre in south-eastern Malawi have one thing in common. Both cities are located on major lakes – Lake Constance and Malawi Lake, a vital economic factor for one of the poorest countries in the world.
This theatre partnership focuses on current economic development and migratory trends from the point of view of both countries and cities. Over the course of two years, German and Malawian actors, directors and playwrights will collaborate on a play about migration and globalisation, which will be performed at the conclusion of the theatre partnership. Following rehearsals in Malawi and Constance, the play will premiere in Constance and then go on tour through Malawi – as is the custom for Nanzikambe Arts. Although it is the only professional theatre in Malawi, it has no fixed performance venue; it tours around the country with a repertory of plays about socio-political topics of the day.

The Wanderlust Fund
The German Federal Cultural Foundation established the Wanderlust Fund to support German municipal and state theatres that wish to engage in a partnership of exchange with a foreign theatre for a period of two to three seasons.
Wanderlust blog
In February 2010 the participating theatres began sharing their impressions of their joint meetings, workshops, guest performances and co-productions in our Wanderlust blog. In addition each season, three Pfadfinder (scouts) head out and visit the Wanderlust projects, describe the international theatre partnerships and document these exciting cross-border encounters in texts and images.
