Theatre from the Very Beginning
A joint programme by the Theater Junge Generation Dresden and the Academic Kiselyov Youth Theatre, Saratov (Russia) - supported by the Wanderlust Fund
The Theater Junge Generation (tjg) and the Russian Kiselyov Youth Theatre, the oldest children’s theatre in Europe, have long devoted themselves to producing plays for the youngest theatre goers (children under three). Yet the theatres’ dramatic language, acting styles and aesthetics differ in fundamental ways. While German children’s theatre is characterized by a straightforward acting style, rejection of epic structures and emphasis on performative and interactive elements, the Russian productions frequently feature cohesive aesthetic works with a strong visual language.
This project explores both approaches with the goal of developing a common theatre language for young viewers. In addition to workshops and guest performances, the theatres will jointly produce a German and Russian version of a play which will be included in the theatres’ repertories.

The Wanderlust Fund
The German Federal Cultural Foundation established the Wanderlust Fund to support German municipal and state theatres that wish to engage in a partnership of exchange with a foreign theatre for a period of two to three seasons.
Wanderlust blog
In February 2010 the participating theatres began sharing their impressions of their joint meetings, workshops, guest performances and co-productions in our Wanderlust blog. In addition each season, three Pfadfinder (scouts) head out and visit the Wanderlust projects, describe the international theatre partnerships and document these exciting cross-border encounters in texts and images.
