Outlook: Exhibition and symposium at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin

With the conclusion of an international touring exhibition, it has become clear that urban shrinkage will continue to be a major issue in the future. The project closed with an exhibition and symposium which provided an outlook on how the world’s shrinking cities will develop in the 21st century and how societal trends can be influenced by interdisciplinary projects that combine the fields of art and science.

The exhibition at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin presented a scientific and artistic analysis of this global phenomenon. With a focus on six case studies in developed industrial countries in North America, Europe and Asia, the exhibition presented urban concepts for shrinking cities as action models for the future. It also addressed issues which will certainly influence urban development in the coming years. What affects will climate change, energy shortages, the demographics of aging and changes in settlement structures have on the phenomenon of urban shrinkage in the 21st century?

The symposium addressed two primary issues in a series of lectures and discussions. First, how will shrinking cities develop on a global scale in the 21st century? And second, how can interdisciplinary projects that combine art and science play a role and help shape societal processes?

Schedule and venue: 16 Oct. 2008 – 23 Nov. 2008 exhibition and 16/17 Oct. 2008 symposium "Shrinking Cities cont." at the Academy of the Arts, Pariser Platz 4, 10117 Berlin
