Sustainability and Future

With its thematic focus on “Sustainability and Future”, the Federal Cultural Foundation wishes to motivate partners and institutions to address environmental issues and sustainable working methods. The Foundation itself has instituted its own environmental programme which mandates continuing improvements in its environmental performance. In 2012, it was granted the EMAS certification for environmental management. In recent years, the Foundation has initiated several programmes based on the motto “Culture of Sustainability” (e.g. Über Lebenskunst) and has supported projects devoted to this topic. One of their central aims is to determine how society could continue developing in the face of lagging growth, and how our “cultural memory” could be better managed. The newly set up programme 360° – Models for Culture in Transformation addresses the transformation processes in cultural institutions, particularly those in rural regions in Germany, and offers expertise and financial aid to help implement new forms of cooperation and collaboration. In addition to initiating projects on sustainability and the future, the Federal Cultural Foundation also funds numerous exhibitions, congresses and discussions on sustainability and the future, such as the discussion series Will We Save the Earth? and the congress The Undead. Both events succeeded at stimulating discussion and collaboration between artists and researchers from the natural sciences and humanities.
