Yvonne Rainer – Space, Body, Language
Exhibition, film, performances
In cooperation with the Kunsthaus Bregenz, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne will present Yvonne Rainer, born in San Francisco in 1934 and one of the world's leading choreographers, dancers and filmmakers. In the 1960s, Rainer made a name for herself in the New York dance scene with choreographies which transformed everyday gestures and activities into a new physical language.
She also produced a number of films between 1976 and 1996 that deal with political and feminist issues and are now regarded as outstanding examples of 20th- century filmmaking. Yvonne Rainer returned to choreography in 2000, producing pieces which focus on pop culture, sport history and dance history, as well as her earlier works.
Although Rainer's extensive oeuvre has been the topic of several film retrospectives, no attempt has been made to present all of her works in one exhibition – until now. This exhibition will also include documentary material, such as drawing and photos, to provide a deeper insight into her working methods. In addition to a film retrospective, the accompanying programme will feature the rehearsal and performance of the piece Trio A, as well as lectures, discussions and events for teachers and children.
