Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Wolf Lepenies

Sociologist, Member of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Cultural Foundation

Wolf Lepenies was born in the East Prussian town of Deuthen (Allenstein) in 1941, is married to Dr. Annette Lepenies and has three children. He received a doctorate in sociology from the University of Münster in 1967 and was appointed professor of sociology at the Freie Universität Berlin in 1971. After working for several years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., he was admitted to the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin which he directed as vice-chancellor from 1986 to 2001. In addition to holding an honorary doctorate from Sorbonne University in Paris, Lepenies is chairman of the scientific advisory committee at the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung (Cologne) and a member of the Axel Springer AG supervisory board. In 2006, he was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade
