Wie lassen sich die Zugänge zu digitalisierten Museumssammlungen einfacher und intuitiver gestalten? Wie können das Wissen und die Ideen des Publikums in den Entwicklungsprozess der digitalen Anwendungen einfließen? Basierend auf den Prinzipien von Open Access und Teilhabe hat das Projekt "NEO Collections" neue Wege erprobt, mit Museumssammlungen zu arbeiten – online und vor Ort im Museum.
Teilhabe und Co-Creation
Das Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, das Nationalmuseum Schweden in Stockholm und das Übersee-Museum Bremen haben in Zusammenarbeit mit ihrem Digitalen Partner Digital Identities (externer Link, öffnet neues Fenster) untersucht, wie Besucher, Nutzerinnen und Kollegen der Häuser einbezogen werden können, um andere Narrative und Sichtweisen nachhaltig in die Erschließung der Sammlungen und ihre Vermittlung zu integrieren und zu präsentieren. Gemeinsam mit Künstler*innen wurden Prototypen und digitale Produkte entwickelt, die den Zugang zu den Sammlungen vereinfachen und ihre Nachnutzung ermöglichen. In den Museen können die Besucher nun u. a. mit digitalisierten Sammlungsobjekten und eigenen Kreationen experimentieren.
Agiles Arbeiten und Open Source
Zentral für das Projekt war das sogenannte iterative Vorgehen. Dieses ermöglichte, mehrere Prototypen zu kreieren und intensive Tests und Verbesserungen durchzuführen, bevor die Anwendungen final umgesetzt wurden. Auch das Feedback verschiedener Nutzergruppen und ihre jeweiligen Bedürfnisse flossen in die agilen Prozesse ein. “NEO Collections" hat Raum für das Ausprobieren neuer Arbeitsweisen und Methoden geschaffen und das Wissen darüber erweitert, wie digitales Kuratieren und Vermitteln funktioniert, weiterentwickelt und zwischen verschiedenen Kultureinrichtungen geteilt werden kann.
Ein Verbundprojekt des Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, des Nationalmuseum Schweden (Stockholm) und des Übersee-Museum Bremen. Gefördert mit 959.000 Euro.

NEO Collections

The NEO project is an important next step in embracing a culture of openness and collaboration. As we have been learning to incorporate the perspectives of our colleagues in sense-making of our collection, we now want to open this up to people outside the institution and invite them not only to use our collection but to contribute to it.

The core of the digital strategy at the museum is to open up to perspectives outside of the institution. We’re looking at knowledge sharing and engagement. This is very important for museums like ours, because our collections were built in a colonial context. Therefore, we urgently need to reshape the way we tell stories. It can no longer be a German or European perspective.

In defining the project, we’ve put a lot of emphasis on the process rather than the outputs.

Eine museale Sammlung erhält ihre Bedeutung nicht per se, sondern durch die Interaktion mit und Interpretation durch unterschiedliche Menschen und Gemeinschaften. Wenn sich mehr Menschen eingeladen und gemeint fühlen, die Sammlung nicht nur zu entdecken, sondern deren Bedeutung mitzugestalten, in den Austausch mit uns zu gehen, dann sind wir auf dem richtigen Weg.

What was the factor at work that made these residencies different? By my estimation, this was trust, the creation of a comfort zone, an unthreatening space and the assurance that the artists were in fact welcome to disagree with museum professionals. This leads to the question of how a space to speak freely can be created within a power imbalance. It happens when people with power choose to give up their fragility, when they are able to sit with discomfort and with criticism without hoisting up their defences.

You can write a lot of concepts and visions and mission statements about how important it is to involve people and to be inclusive. What we learnt in the first steps it’s not about writing strategy. It really has something to do with how you feel, how open you are to sitting with your own insecurity in certain situations. I think the process of stepping back and listening is crucial for the future of the project.

This project gets to the heart of the institution. It will change the institution. And I have to admit that I was nervous at first where this will be going. In this project we experienced that it's worth taking the road, even if you don't know where it leads to.
