Almut Wagner studied Theatre, Film and Television Studies, Romance Studies and Sociology at the University of Cologne. From 1991 to 2001, she worked at the Schauspiel Bonn, most recently as the dramaturge and director of the Bonn Biennial Festival – New European Plays. From 2001 to 2005 and again from 2008 to 2010, she was the theatre dramaturge at the Vienna Festival (under general theatre director Luc Bondy and theatre directors Marie Zimmermann/Stefanie Carp). From 2005 to 2008, she worked as the chief dramaturge of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. Between 2011 and 2014, she headed the dramaturgy department of the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf together with Stefan Schmidtke. She has worked as a guest lecturer at the University of Vienna and the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen/Bochum. Almut Wagner became the chief dramaturge of the Schauspiel am Theater Basel at the start of the 2015/16 season.
