Project
In spring 2027 the festival “Dance is a Mother” at Kampnagel will highlight international dance styles in the Hip Hop and club dance scenes. The project investigates these styles, not merely as new and nascent phenomena of urban hubs, but also as knowledge and movement cultures with long traditions, e.g. in the African diaspora. It reveals exclusionary mechanisms in dance history and sheds light on their origin stories in resistant, community-building contexts, specifically in the resistance against oppression, racism, queer- and trans-phobic tendencies, and marginalisation. The project also includes the “German Ballroom Conference” for the first time, which aims to build self-organised structures and encourage discourse within the German ballroom community.
The project “Dance Is a Mother” is funded through General Project Funding by the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
