Projektbeschreibung

With the exhibition project “The Glare from the Fringe”, the 2026 Lausitz Festival presents selected works by the Brazilian contemporary artists Jonathas de Andrade which explore the relationship between humans and nature in social, environmental and economic processes of transformation. These works are juxtaposed with pieces from the collection of the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art (BLMK) in Cottbus. The show will be accompanied by events in the Knappenrode Energiefabrik and Schloss Bad Muskau, and feature international perspectives rarely presented in the Lausitz region. In 2027 the organisers plan to adapt the exhibition for presentation at the Jewish Museum in New York and the Pinacoteca de São Paulo.

Jonathas de Andrades (*1982 in Maceió, Brazil) is an internationally renowned photo and video artist who is still relatively unknown in Germany. His works reflect social conflicts and power structures and the challenges they present to residents of Brazil, also with respect to the country’s colonial and multiethnic past. The exhibition includes his photo series “Olho da Rua [Out Loud]” featuring portraits of 100 homeless people in Recife, a city of over a million inhabitants, who experience moments of freedom and self-determination through exchange and solidarity with others. Andrade’s installations, photographs and videos which largely explore the dynamics of power and transformation in Brazil, will be displayed alongside selected artworks from the 1920s and 1930s. These comprise photos, graphic works and paintings by such artists as Walter Ballhause, Hans Grundig, Lea Grundig, Oskar Nerlinger, Alexander Rodtschenko, Fritz Schulze and Eva Schulze-Knabe, who see art as an aesthetic expression of committed social action.

The exhibition is funded through General Project Funding by the German Federal Cultural Foundation and will be presented in the Lausitz region in summer 2026 and in Brazil and USA in 2027.
