Living with the Memory

Interviews with the survivors of the Holocaust

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and its Information Centre opened in Berlin in May 2005. Beginning in September 2008 the Memorial Foundation presented over one thousand interviews with survivors of the Holocaust, collectively titled "Living with the Memory". In their interviews the survivors remember what they experienced, how they reacted and what they suffered during and following Nazi persecution. Since the 1970s the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University has collected over 4,300 interviews, of which a fraction is used in this project.
As part of this cooperative project initiated by the Federal Cultural Foundation, the project team has digitalized the various video formats of these interviews so that they can be presented at the Information Centre and safely archived for the future. Visitors of the Information Centre are able to access compilations of these interviews based on biographical or thematic aspects, or view and listen to them in an open archive in full-length and in the original language.
