Admission free? What we expect from cultural education

A discussion about the recommended proposals in the review commission’s “Culture in Germany” report

Explanations

Just under one year ago, a review commission presented a comprehensive report on the state of "Culture in Germany" to the German federal parliament. One of the chapters in the report addressed the issue of "cultural education". At this public forum experts and citizens discussed the commission's recommendations regarding how to support cultural education and which concrete steps are feasible and necessary.
One of the commission's 465 proposals recommends that all children be offered free admission to cultural institutions. The question is, however, what impact will their participation in art and culture have and to what degree can it make up for socio-political deficits in the area of social integration?
These and other questions were addressed by a number of cultural and political leaders, including Hortensia Völckers, Artistic Director of the Federal Cultural Foundation, and Wolfgang Thierse, Vice President of the German federal parliament. The moderator was Thomas Bille (MDR).
