The Junge Oper at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Children’s and Young People’s Theatre Centre in the Federal Republic of Germany are collaborating on a joint project that promotes the development of contemporary music theatre. In November 2016, the Happy New Ears festival presented guest performances of outstanding European music theatre productions and revealed the breadth and diversity of the contemporary scene. The accompanying congress explored the question of how one could make the most of the synergies resulting from the collaboration of artists of varying disciplines and generations, and develop them further. By tying both formats together, the congress and festival participants had the opportunity to join an international, top-level forum where they discussed new developments and theoretical impulses in contemporary music theatre production for young audiences. Happy New Ears was accompanied by five international observers.

Theatre directors from the European continent were invited to have their productions reviewed by March 2016 for possible inclusion in the festival. The University of Hildesheim and the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts also awarded scholarships to students and prospective artists to allow them to attend the festival and congress.
