In Uno Museum – Science and art in Görlitz
Funded through the KUR – Programme for the Conservation of Moveable Cultural Assets
The Museum of Cultural History in Görlitz owns a unique collection of historic art cabinets containing such items as electrifying machines, furniture, prints and minerals. The specimens are displayed in rooms specially designed for the collections, and in some cases, are stored in the original containers from the 19th century. This collection of historic cabinets is unarguably one of the most unique of its kind.
The valuable collection, comprised of a physics library and cabinets of prints and specimens of natural history, antiquity and minerals, originally belonged to the Oberlausitz Scientific Society founded in 1779. For the past 200 years, it has been stored at Neissstraße 30 – the most impressive building of the Baroque period in Görlitz – and since 1951, has been under the curatorship of the Museum of Cultural History.
In terms of their condition, many of the art cabinets were in a critical state. Some of the pieces were severely threatened. The KUR project conserved these exquisite historic art collections using the most modern art technological methods. The measures safeguarded this treasure of cultural knowledge dating back to around 1800 for research purposes and appropriately presented it in newly renovated exhibition rooms in the Baroque-period building.
