The “Future Lab” at the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and its extraordinary model of cooperation have been the centre of increasing national and international interest. In one of Bremen’s city districts facing the most daunting social challenges, musicians converted several rooms of a school into a rehearsal venue in 2007. There they became part of the pupils’ everyday lives and have since succeeded in helping these young people tap their individual potential through music. Each year the participating musicians stage a “City District Opera” which opens the door to classical music to the residents of the entire city quarter. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the “Future Lab”, the ensemble wishes to pass the experience of this work on to others by way of an international academy and a public symposium.
Twelve selected participants will accompany the ensemble to witness the development process of the 7th City District Opera between November 2016 and May 2017. With regard to the challenge of reconciling theory and practice, they will work with academics and experts to identify problems and develop recommendations for addressing them. In this way, the musicians will gain insights which they can incorporate into their own work. The “Future Lab” of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen issued a call for applications to prospective participants which ended on 15 October 2016. At the end of the Academy programme and with the premiere of the City District Opera, the professional community will be invited to a symposium in May 2017. There, project organisers will present the results of the Academy for discussion with artists, members of the cultural education sector, teachers and participants.
