7th International Photo Triennial 2007 in Esslingen

Exhibition - Identity and Homeland

Explanations

The 7th International Photo Triennial in Esslingen in 2007 addressed the subject of Identity and Homeland. Works by artists such as Richard Billingham, Jan Koster and Teresa Margolles deal with the search for identity in one's homeland and abroad. In the face of ongoing globalisation, it has become increasingly difficult to be sure of one's identity in highly-developed societies. Today, identity is a combination of biographical, geographical, mental, social and emotional factors. In 2007, the triennial featured photographic works from Central America where issues of identity and homeland are especially relevant. Following centuries of colonial domination, the inhabitants of Central America must now address issues of identity in the face of the overwhelming economic and cultural influence exerted by its powerful neighbour, the United States.
