“EIGHT BRIDGES / Music for Cologne” was established in 2011 as a festival of contemporary music. For ten days at the beginning of May, Cologne’s major concert halls and unconventional locations will serve as venues for numerous concerts which present the international diversity of modern music in various genres. The organisers have developed a concert programme that promises to appeal to a broader segment of the public beyond the circle of those who are already avid listeners of contemporary music. The 2019 edition of “EIGHT BRIDGES” will feature music by the contemporary Greek-French composer Georges Aperghis. His work is characterised by his interest in diverse art forms and connections between music and scientific and social issues. Georges Aperghis is the recipient of numerous prizes including the Golden Lion of the 2015 Venice Music Biennale. The festival in Cologne will present audiences with eleven of the composer’s works from all creative periods of his life. The concerts will be performed in cooperation with the Klangforum Wien, the Ensemble Asko|Schönberg, thenieuw ensemble and the SWR Vokalensemble. The WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne and the Gürzenich-Orchester Cologne will present individual productions of their own. In order to encourage young musicians to devote more time and effort to writing and performing contemporary music, the festival will commission young musicians from Berne University of the Arts and the ensemble of the Junge Oper Stuttgart to produce works for the festival. Several concerts will also be recorded and broadcast to even larger radio audiences.
