Blow Up

Antonioni's Classic Film and Photography

Arthur Evans, Filmstill aus Blow-Up (Ausschnitt)

The photo gallery C/O Berlin was founded in 2000 with private funds, and since then, has made a name for itself with a vibrant cultural programme of international standing. This includes 89 photo exhibitions in just 13 years, a multifaceted educational programme and intensive presentation work on location as well as close cooperation with institutions and museums worldwide. Exhibitions featuring works by such renowned photographers as Annie Leibovitz and Peter Lindbergh have made the gallery one of the most successful art institutions in Berlin, attracting a high level of public attention.

In early 2013, C/O Berlin was forced to leave its long-term exhibition venue in the Postfuhramt in the trendy Berlin Mitte district and move to the Amerika Haus in the west of Berlin. The show "Blow up" was one of the first major photo exhibitions to be presented by the team at C/O Berlin in the converted rooms of the Amerika Haus. Based on photographs, films and video installations, the exhibition focused on the characteristic aspects of Antonioni’s pioneering film “Blow Up”. The themes ranged from advertising aesthetics, fashion photography and voyeurism to the relationship between static photography and moving pictures. The featured artists included such well-known photographers as Eve Arnold and Ron Galella, and fine artists like Sophie Calle and Hiroshi Sugimoto. They represented a cross-section of various artistic currents of the 1950s and 1960s and demonstrated the timelessness and modernity of Antonioni’s visual language. The exhibition has been developed by the C/O Berlin in cooperation with the Albertina in Vienna and the Fotomuseum Winterthur.
