Build!

A transdisciplinary lab on building and ecology on a planet near the end of its rope

In 2018 a new international centre for literature opened at Burg Hülshoff, the birthplace of the famous poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Parallel to the ongoing renovation work and planned extensions to the historical building, this project has developed a wide-ranging artistic programme entitled “Build! ” which brought writers and poets together with architects, filmmakers, media artists, dancers, musicians and environmental activists. In workshops and joint artistic projects, they have examined and discussed the topic of nature in a public forum. What is nature in the Anthropocene? How do we talk about nature in times of urban gardening and global warming? Are ecology and architecture compatible, and how might we imagine a new ecology? The project’s organisers have developed three major cross-disciplinary productions: a live radio play concert, a walk-through sculpture and a cinematic staging based on texts by well-known writers, such as Hamed Abboud, Ann Cotten and Yoko Tawada. All three productions have been performed at the “Natur am Bau” festival. The accompanying festival symposium “Ecology & Madness” has addressed extreme positions of climate-change scepticism and activism.

The architect duo Umschichten has build actual temporary structures in the park grounds of Burg Hülshoff which explored the relationship of building and ecology.
