DO THE RIGHT THING

Ariel Efraim Ashbel and friends GbR – financed through the Bauhaus Today Fund

DO THE RIGHT THING (DTRT) adapts the theatrical legacy of the Bauhaus in order to shed light on the interplay of action (DO), ethics (THE RIGHT) and materiality (THING). The production, written for three performers and accompanying object montages, examines the possibilities of theatre that is free of texts, narratives and human protagonists, yet contains politically relevant subject matter. The production investigates how the Bauhaus with its interwoven objects promoted ethical commitment and action, and how its effects continue to reverberate today.

DTRT is comprised of two acts. In the first, three musicians perform an abstract musical score based on material and references to the history of the Bauhaus stage. In the second act, there are no human performers; rather the lighting, sound and objects play the leading roles. Both acts are equal in length and are accompanied by a musical score. In this way, they mirror each other, calling to mind Schlemmer’s famous words, “Man and space are governed by law. Whose law should apply?”
