Experiencing Architecture
A project to be presented at the reopening festivities of the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in 2027
Experiencing Architecture
The Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin is home to the world’s largest collection of the Bauhaus (1919-1933). The museum, originally designed by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, is currently under renovation and being expanded with a new museum annex. To mark the reopening of the museum in 2027, the project “Experiencing Architecture” aims to develop multisensory and creative methods to educate the public about architecture. The project wants to encourage visitors not only to look at architecture, but also to actively experience it. The Israeli architect and curator Eran Eizenhamer is working together with the curators Friederike Holländer, Nina Wiedemeyer and an interdisciplinary team to examine how the architecture of the new museum annex can be made more tangible and accessible. In so doing, they hope to inspire visitors to engage more actively with the buildings and their urban surroundings.
The project consists of three phases: the first being a symposium in September 2026 that will bring together international artists and experts from the fields of architecture, design, music, dance and performance to explore the new museum annex. Their results will be integrated into the opening programme in 2027. In this second phase, visitors will be introduced to the new spaces and artistically experience architecture through a combination of performances, installations and workshops. The project will conclude in 2027 with a publication featuring the exercises and insights developed during the project. This will serve as an ‘instruction manual’ for visitors to playfully explore the spaces and architecture of the new museum.
