Project
The effects of climate change are already being felt in Hamburg today, in the form of rising sea levels, strong winds and storm surges. International shipping has earned Hamburg the reputation of being the “Gateway to the World”, but it is also a driver of global warming. In Hamburg, the causes and effects of the climate crisis coincide almost symbolically.
In summer 2026, Kampnagel will present “Hitze.Heat.”, a themed festival that will make the topic accessible both sensually and intellectually. At the Kulturfabrik, audiences will be able to experience a variety of artistic works, including a collaboration between the Chinese artist Tianzhuo Chen, the French choreographer and dancer Ndoho Ange and the Indonesian choreographer and dancer Siko Setyanto. Together, they will present a new piece exploring the consequences of global warming. The performance collective God’s Entertainment will present their series “SpongeBobo”, and the Namibian artist Nesindano Namise (also known as xamques) will present the results of an artist lab on a “green deal” in Namibia. The “Burning with Words” think tank, led by the philosopher Fahim Amir, will explore the links between the climate crisis and postcolonial and ecological issues.
Migrantpolitan, based at the Kampnagel site, has been bringing refugees and Hamburg residents together to conceive and develop new forms of living and working together for ten years. The focus there will also be on how people from different backgrounds experience and interpret the causes and consequences of the climate crisis.
