Project description

Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) was one of the most influential French artists of the 20th century. Following an extensive presentation of her works in Munich, the Gropius Bau plans to stage the first comprehensive exhibition of Bourgeois’ works in Berlin. Together with the Hayward Gallery of London and in close collaboration with Jerry Gorovoy, Bourgeois’ friend and personal assistant of many years, the Gropius Bau will display around 90 international loans spanning the last two decades of her artistic career, the focus of which will be Bourgeois’ artistic works with fabrics. Textiles played a central role in the artist’s life and works. At the young age of 12, she began creating drawings for the repair of tapestries in her parents’ restoration workshop. After completing her art studies at a relatively late age, she moved from Paris to New York where she continued honing her craft with fragile, textile materials. In her extensive collection of works produced over the course of seven decades, both fabrics and textile cultural techniques, such as sewing and weaving, played a decisive role. The thematically diverse exhibition presents Bourgeois’ unusual oeuvre which includes two- and three-dimensional sculptural works, numerous drawings, woven works and collages.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a multifaceted programme of lectures, films and panel discussions, providing visitors with greater insight into the artist’s textile works from various perspectives. An extensive catalogue will document additional key works in her oeuvre and recent research findings.
