One can observe history, stories and narrative possibilities in the repertory of a cultural institution, much like an archive which is continuously updated. The theatre series “The Repertory” incites encounters: unexpected, institutionally unforeseen, or completely ordinary encounters. Encounters between guests and artists, different public spheres, the city and country, a mock-up institution and an actual one.
The project comprises four episodes – a theatrical journey into the country (“The Theatre”), the replica of a Stuttgart office of the “institution” as an archive, exhibition venue and stage (“The Office”), the adaptation of a site-specific stage play (“The Audience”) and a production in the theatre as a whole (“The Village”).
All of the pieces test various formats of encounter, explore the future of our institutions and react to the present situation at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe which will soon undergo renovation and expansion. “The Repertory” portrays the building plans as a mirror of social upheaval and investigates the structurally significant distinction of an established theatre compared to independent project work: its repertory.
