Voices of the City: A Symphony of Local and International Memories
In the project “Transit Zwickau”, Theater Plauen-Zwickau plans to highlight the history of labour migration in the saxonian city. Zwickau is known for its industrial history in automotive, textile and mechanical engineering, but also has a long tradition of welcoming immigrant workers from non-European countries. This history of migration has long been overlooked. With “Transit Zwickau”, the project organisers hope to revive this suppressed chapter of city history by focusing on three key historical episodes: the colonial period, the Nazi years and the GDR era. The theatre will conduct detailed research into specific sites, figures and industries in Zwickau based on archival materials and contemporary reports and shed light on the local and international historical contexts. The research findings will then serve as the basis of a play, developed in cooperation with residents of Zwickau, former contract workers from Mozambique and Vietnam, the Sachsenring Zwickau choir association and dancers from Vietnam and Mozambique. The production will be staged in May 2025 as a sequence of scenes at highly symbolic locations in public space around town.
