Where I Live
The Haus am Waldsee will mark its 80th anniversary in 2026. The celebration offers the public – along with historians, sociologists and artists – the chance to revisit the history of this storied institution founded in 1946. The exhibition centre is the oldest institution of contemporary art in Berlin. In terms of collective awareness, however, very little of its early history following the collapse of the Nazi regime and the end of World War II is known to the general public today. With this extensive research and exhibition series, the project organisers not only wish to shed light on the prehistory and founding story of the exhibition centre but also conduct a critical self-examination. A central question they pose is how to develop a responsible exhibition practice for the institution in the future. An intergenerational group exhibition with works by local and international artists, as well as a participatory accompanying programme and summer school aim to critically examine the institution’s historical and ideological underpinnings. The international group exhibition unfolds through a spatial intervention by artist Richard Venlet. It brings together historical and new works by Nigin Beck, Rhea Dillon, Robert Haas, Hannah Höch, Patrick Jolley & Reynold Reynolds, Alexandre Khondji, Atiéna R. Kilfa, Henry Koerner, Yoora Park, Oskar Schlemmer, Renée Sintenis, Ian Waelder, and Frau von Zinowiew.
