Wrinkles in Time

The art of folding in modern art

When we think of folds and creases, we usually think of a common everyday phenomenon. However, scientists, mathematicians and philosophers also spend much of their time thinking about how and why material folds and how these processes can be influenced. The exhibition Wrinkles in Time explored the principles and design possibilities of folding in the fine arts and carried out basic research. The exhibition presented contemporary pieces such as Doug Aitken's fictitious skylines created from folded brand names and the photographer Wolfgang Tillman's recent series "paper drops" which examines the sculptural aspects of folds. Older artistic positions from the 1960s and 1970s were shown as well.
