Mediterranean Voices

The Mediterranean – a transcultural region spanning three continents, the birth place of three world religions and the cradle of democracy. It is an area of the world where cultures clash, a place in constant flux and turmoil which strongly influences Europe’s development. Who is set to shape the European continent in the 21st century, and who in the Mediterranean region will be relegated to the side-lines? In view of these considerations, the project “Mediterranean Voices” tried to initiate a multifaceted artistic discourse in the area of contemporary music. Twelve composers from the Mediterranean region have been invited to compose a chamber musical work for one to seven vocalists. The works have been developed in close cooperation with the Vocalsolisten Stuttgart during the course of 2013. In addition to the personal encounters between the artists, the project held three symposiums in Cologne, Stuttgart and Nicosia. The video artist Daniel Kötter accompanied the project and incorporated his films into the artistic process. Both the musical and cinematic works have been presented in a special venue designed by the Greek architect Sofia Dona – a concert hall and exhibition space merged into one which emphasizes the diversity and contradictory nature of the Mediterranean region.
The premiere took place during the “Eclat” festival in Stuttgart in 2014. Additional performances are planned in Marseille, Athens, Istanbul, Cairo, Venice, Tel Aviv and other cities.
