Yiddish Wo:men – Another Story of Modernity
One of the programme highlights of the Weimar Yiddish Summer Festival in 2026 is “Yiddish Wo:men – Another Story of Modernity”, portraying Yiddish-speaking women as pioneers of European Yiddish culture. The project consists of three formats that address the Jewish awakening in modern times from a female perspective. The module Her:Kol – Yiddish Women's Song Cultures has commissioned 21st-century women composers to develop new Yiddish songs based on historical and contemporary poetry by female poets. The music theatre piece “Togbukh” tells the story of the actress Rose Shoshana Kahan and her escape to Shanghai. A virtual exhibition based on Yiddish manuscripts from the 15th century to the present highlights how women came to be modern-day pioneers through reading and artistic work.
