Performance by Public Movement for the city of Frankfurt am Main
The Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm, the Israeli performance group Public Movement and other performance collectives will stage a festival from 12 to 14 September 2025 to commemorate the first International Workers’ Olympiad.
One hundred years ago, the Workers’ Sport Movement organised the International Workers’ Olympiad summer games in Frankfurt am Main. It not only focused on athletic competition, but also on communal sporting activities that were considered an integral part of civic education. Its motto was ‘Nie wieder Krieg’ (No more war!), and athletes from twelve nations competed in the event. The competition emphasised the more playful aspects of sports, featuring such wacky disciplines as Slow Cycling. An accompanying cultural programme called for solidarity, peace, equal opportunity and international understanding.
In collaboration with the performance and media art collective LIGNA, the group Public Movement will revisit the utopian visions of the Workers’ Olympiads this coming summer 2025. Together they will develop a choreography for Frankfurt’s public spaces which showcases historic body images and examines how body culture, politics and society are interconnected.
