Project Description
The Lucinda Childs Dance Company presents the world premieres of four new works at Kampnagel in Hamburg, featuring music by Philipp Glass, Johann Sebastian Bach, Hildur Guðnadóttir and a video piece by Anri Sala.
The choreographer and dancer Lucinda Childs, born in New York in 1940, is arguably one of the most influential figures in modern dance history. The Lucinda Childs Dance Company, which she founded in 1973, is known for its experimental, often minimalistic dance style. “Four New Works”, the first new pieces produced by the company in almost ten years, will be created during the rehearsal phase in Hamburg. The production consists of four parts. The first, “Distant Figure”, is choreographed for seven dancers to a composition by Philipp Glass, with whom Childs personally collaborated on multiple occasions. The pianist Anton Batagov will perform the music live on stage. The second, “Actus”, is a dance duet choreographed to the cantata “Actus Tragicus” by Johann Sebastian Bach. The piece “Geranium ‘64” is a solo being developed by Lucinda Childs based on the video work “Day Still Night Again” (2022) by the visual artist Anri Sala, which Childs herself will perform. The fourth part, “Timeline”, is being developed in collaboration with the Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, who is known for her film music featured in such movies as “Tár” and “Joker”.
“Four New Works” will be the opening performance at the International Summer Festival at Kampnagel on 7 August 2024. The 85-minute dance production will be shown in Hamburg several more times afterwards before the Lucinda Childs Dance Company takes it on an international tour.
