[Who] Rules to Encounter

[Who] Rules to Encounter

How are we going to interact with AI systems and humanoid robotics in the future? How do we want to allow autonomous humanoid robots to participate in areas of social and working life? These are the central questions in this artistic research project by the artist and choreographer Silke Grabinger and the Akademie für Theater und Digitalität in Dortmund.
In iterative developmental sprints, dancers of Ballett Dortmund / NRW Juniorballet, students, inclusive ensembles and amateur groups will propose and choreographically translate rules for interacting with humanoid robotics. Their movements will be recorded by generative AI via motion capturing. As the project progresses, these recordings will help build a behavioural archive for interaction with humanoid robotics. In the end, the results will be artistically presented to the public in one-on-one performances and also shown at festivals.
The research process is being academically supervised (e.g. by the Technical University of Vienna, the Johannes Kepler University Linz and the University of Arts Linz) and publicly discussed. The project has also enlisted the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML, Dortmund) as a partner.

New artistic perspectives on AI and society

With its ‘Art & AI’ programme (2024–2028), the German Federal Cultural Foundation is funding the development and implementation of eleven projects in which cultural institutions and artists are collaborating with international research institutions. Their aim is to artistically experiment with AI technologies and address the societal consequences of current and future technological developments.
