Real Art? On the Aesthetic Status of the Original, Copy and Forgery

Conference in the event series Philosophy:Art 2009-2011 – a joint project by the Federal Cultural Foundation and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich

Why do we generally prefer originals over copies or forgeries? Couldn’t a perfect copy or forgery meet our aesthetic demands just as well? What kind of characteristics do we believe are not found in a copy or forgery?

This conference focused on the complex issue of the original, copy and forgery with particular regard to the fine arts. The conference examined what essential characteristics of an artwork are supposedly missing in copies or forgeries. The discussion also addressed whether and to what extent works of fine art differ from works of other art genres in this respect.

The conference is one of the events in the Philosophy:Art conference series (opens in a new window), organized by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich together with five museums in Germany. Conferences will also be held in Munich and Bonn. The goal of the project is to discuss current artistic issues as clearly and understandably as possible, and apply the methods and terms used in analytical philosophy to enhance our understanding of contemporary art.
