Programme-based Funding

Cultural institutions in large German cities are facing an array of complex, cultural-political challenges resulting from the rise of overlapping crises. The nationwide programme “Übermorgen – New Models for Cultural Institutions” invites cultural organisations and municipalities to create a space for fundamental innovations and to resist the temptation of falling back on what is familiar and comfortable.

To enable cultural institutions in Germany to find new partners in non-European countries and implement long-term artistic projects, the German Federal Cultural Foundation has launched the programme “WAYS – Towards Fair and Sustainable International Partnerships”. A central focus of collaboration concerns fairness and sustainability.

Joint funding: As part of a joint scholarship programme to promote the Israeli art scene, Artis and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awarded ten cross-disciplinary grants to Israeli contemporary artists to finance their accommodation and research at cultural institutions in Germany. Building on this programme, the German Federal Cultural Foundation is funding six artistic projects that were developed by these Israeli artists during their financed stays at German cultural institutions.

“LOKAL – Programme for Culture and Engagement” is awarding funding to establish up to 40 long-term networks nationwide in German cities and communities with under 100,000 inhabitants. The funding initiative aims to strengthen cultural associations in smaller towns and more remote regions through joint artistic projects and network-building – both locally and across Europe.

With its three-part pilot programme “tuned – Network for Contemporary Classical Music”, the German Federal Cultural Foundation wishes to promote innovative approaches which offer alternatives to the “classical” concert business. The three parts are the network, nationwide academies and an international festival.

For the model project Context – Staging Literature, the German Federal Cultural Foundation has teamed up with the association Unabhängige Lesereihen e.V. to develop innovative and experimental formats for presenting contemporary literature. The independently curated, cross-disciplinary events aim to strengthen literary formats and get more people interested in literature.

“Art & AI” supports the development and realisation of eleven artistic projects that explore AI technologies. The funding programme is targeted at contemporary cultural institutions and independent artist groups in all artistic areas. The programme includes workshops, academies and presentations, in which knowledge is shared with interested parties both within and outside the programme.

Although art’s impact on the climate is still largely unknown, many cultural professionals in Germany wish to do their part to mitigate the climate crisis. In response to pressing questions, the Federal Cultural Foundation has established the programme “Zero” which invites cultural institutions from a broad range of artistic areas to participate in a nationwide sustainability campaign.
