Transmediale has become one of the most prominent festivals for art and digital culture in the world and is one of Germany’s cultural institutions of excellence which the Federal Cultural Foundation has pledged to finance in the long term. The festival has been bringing together international artists, researchers, activists, and thinkers with the goal of developing new outlooks on our technological era.

transmediale 2019 focused on the role of emotions in digital culture

At transmediale 2019 the focus has been on the question what role emotions and empathy play within digital culture. From 31 January to 3 February international artists, cultural workers, and theoreticians came together at Haus der Kulturen der Welt with the aim of learning to understand technologies of feeling—and how to challenge them. The 32nd edition of the festival has asked “What moves you?”. It refered not only to an emotional response but also to the way in which affect becomes mobilized as a political force today.

For the first time in many years, the festival did not have a title. The festival wanted to concentrate on the creation of learning environments with a high level of participant and audience engagement.

Transmediale is organised by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH in cooperation with the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. The Federal Cultural Foundation supports the transmediale as a cultural institution of excellence.

Artistic director: Kristoffer Gansing
