“Masculinities” is a research and exhibition project co-organised by the three women directors of the art associations in Bonn, Cologne and Düsseldorf. It is the first time these three institutions are collaborating on such an extensive project. Its central theme is the analysis of the male image as portrayed in feminist art and the question of what a feminist exhibition on masculinity might look like. Based on artistic positions and art-theoretical and socio-political considerations, the project partners wish to reflect on contemporary concepts of masculinity in and outside the realm of art. Each art association will present selected aspects related to masculinity which correspond to the exhibition history of their respective institution. To present the diverse range of perspectives, the curators will show artworks from various generations and cultural contexts including a series of newly created pieces. For example, the artists Lynda Benglis, Julia Scher and Sarah Lucas explore self-portraits to investigate gender stereotypes. Other artists like Belkis Ayon, Juliette Blightman, Hilary Lloyd, Shahryar Nashat and Jimmy de Sana highlight the self-image of men in their works, reveal the established conventions of the “male view” and then deconstruct them. The exhibitions and accompanying events will take place simultaneously at all three institutions and thus promote exchange between the art associations and their members.
