Project description

The Berlin “Klangteppich” festival has been showcasing musicians from Iran and the Iranian diaspora since 2018. The festival promotes cross-border encounters between artists of various genres and generates attention for underrepresented musical perspectives and working methods. The programme critically examines Eurocentric perceptions and presents artistic forms of expression free of categorisation or exoticisation.

The artist-in-residence of the fourth edition of “Klangteppich” is the Iranian composer and musician Arshia Samsaminia. Together with the double bass player and cellist Johannes Fink and the violist and violinist Nikolaus Schlierf, Samsaminia will perform the world premiere of a brand-new composition. He will also stage a lecture performance in Berlin as the guest of the artists’ collective Slavs and Tatars.

The transgender performance artist Parisa Madani from Amsterdam will present a long-durational performance together with three other queer artists from the areas of drag and burlesque. In their piece, they invite listeners to “Pariyestan” where they can relax on mattresses and fall in and out of sleep during an entire night of poems and lullabies in multiple languages, set to music and sound art. In four other pieces, including a sound walk and a spoken-word performance, the participating musicians, visual artists and performers focus on the personal stories of people who move between Iran and Germany. In addition to the performances, the festival will host podium discussions which will be recorded and uploaded online for later viewing.
