Contemporary pop music from African countries continues to be labelled with stereotypical, exoticised attributes and is frequently reduced to pop-cultural genres like Afrobeat and Afrojazz. Very few people realise, however, that Africa has a diverse range of musical scenes and trends which have ties to non-mainstream “Western” underground cultures and have meanwhile even become global phenomena in their own right.
The concert series “In/Audible Sounds”, which will be presented during the International Summer Festival at Kampnagel in Hamburg, highlights the music and musical trends from the Sub-Saharan region with which German audiences are largely unfamiliar: Black Metal from Botswana, bass music and experimental electronic music from South Africa.
In joint performances with musicians from Germany, the African musicians will initiate discussion about their respective genres in order to challenge conventional narratives and ethnicised attributes in the pop-cultural context. The singer/musician Portable aka Bodycode (South Africa) will perform together with the experimental club musician Kyoka (Germany). The bass musician Okmalumkoolkat (South Africa) and Robot Koch (Germany) will present the innovative potential of the low keys. And the death metal cowboys Overthrust from Botswana will meet the Cologne-based black-metal monster Ultha on stage.
The concert series will go on tour through Europe following its debut in Hamburg.
