In order to culturally stabilize the European process of unification, it is extremely important to establish a common European public sphere. In 2004 the Board of Trustees at the Federal Cultural Foundation decided to fund the Internet magazine "signandsight.com" from 2004 to 2008. The online magazine publishes English translations of outstanding articles on arts and culture that appear in the German press. In contrast to most countries, Germany fosters cultural debate as an integral part of socio-political discourse in the national media. By translating these remarkable articles into English, this project aims to make German cultural debate accessible to the European public, and in so doing, significantly contribute to establishing a European public sphere. In 2007 the project initiated a debate on multiculturalism, integration and Islam (external link, opens in a new window), which quickly spread and continued throughout Europe.
