Project description

The NS Documentation Centre presents the history of National Socialism in Munich and the special role the city played in the Nazi dictatorship’s system of terror. Together with the renowned curator Nicolaus Schafhausen, the NS Documentation Centre has created the exhibition “Tell me about yesterday tomorrow” which combines contemporary works of art with the institutional work of remembering. The exhibition represents uncharted territory in many ways. The intensive collaboration between science and art is a decisive aspect in the project. The artists have developed their works in close cooperation with the historians at the NS Documentation Centre in Munich. Works by more than 40 contemporary artists offer additional insights and aesthetic and poetic commentary on the historic permanent exhibition at the Documentation Centre. In the sense of “mobilising memory”, the project examines specific forms of Germany’s culture of remembrance, taking into account how this culture is presented from a critical, international perspective.
In summer 2020, public events will be held in front of the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism. Starting in spring 2020, a programme of films, performances and discussion formats, organised in cooperation with other Munich-based institutions, will be staged in the forecourt of the Documentation Centre. The architect Nikolaus Hirsch has been commissioned to design a temporary structure for this assembly. The project will be accompanied by a publication in May 2020 which will supplement the exhibition and public programme with theoretical and literary pieces.
