Images, Voices and Clichés

The former women’s concentration camp in Ravensbrück is an internationally renowned landmark commemorating Germany’s violent history. Some 120,000 women from 30 nations were imprisoned at the camp during the years of National Socialist tyranny. As part of the commemorative events marking the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in April 2020, the Memorial Museum Ravensbrück will open a new, permanent, historical-documentary exhibition entitled “In the SS-Auxiliary: The Female Guards of the Ravensbrück Women’s Concentration Camp”, financed in part by the state of Brandenburg. In this context, five artists will create works for temporary display which highlight the perpetrators and explore the cliché of the Nazi female wardens as “blonde furies” and deviant women. The artists Susanne Kriemann, Arnold Dreyblatt, Moritz Fehr, Marianna Christofides and Dominique Hurth will take the opportunity to create spaces for communication to supplement the ongoing historical research in this area. By collaborating with historians and fine artists, the Memorial Museum Ravensbrück hopes to venture down new paths.
