project description

Since its debut in 1998, the Berlin Biennale has since become a globally acclaimed show of contemporary art in an international context. The festival is firmly rooted in the art scene in one of Europe’s most vibrant cultural metropolises, boldly exploring the pressing issues of our times through artistic means. With its artistic positions and accompanying programme, each festival edition encourages constructive thematic engagement with current sociopolitical discourse. Each show is the result of a two-year preparation phase which allows the curators the freedom to present new positions irrespective of the interests of the art market and art collectors. The Berlin Biennale evokes a remarkable response throughout Germany and on the international stage – and for young artists, the chance to participate represents a milestone in their professional career. In the years to come, each edition of the Berlin Biennale will continue to experiment with new exhibition formats for contemporary art. Moreover, it plans to focus on promoting innovative forms of network-building and fair coproductions of artistic works. Another core issue in its organisational development is environmental sustainability. In the coming years, the Berlin Biennale intends to significantly reduce its CO2 emissions and resource consumption. In order to improve cooperation with civil society, it will continue expanding its educational and participatory activities. It also plans to develop a digitalisation strategy which will not only strengthen the digital competence of the public, but that of its own staff as well.

The 13th Berlin Biennale takes place in summer 2025 and is curated by Zasha Colah.
