project description

The exhibition project at the Syker Vorwerk – Centre for Contemporary Art in Lower Saxony investigates the relationship between cultural diversity, identity and origin as depicted in works of international contemporary art. The exhibition includes pieces by eleven renowned artists, such as Delaine Le Bas, Manaf Halbouni and Ahmet Ögüt, which examine culturally influenced constructs of human coexistence and power imbalances. What all the featured artists have in common is their sense of belonging to multiple cultures and their desire to overcome antiquated attitudes, images and power structures. The exhibition presents and celebrates the many differences in cultural understanding which symbolic orders of representation had previously scrutinised and deconstructed. With its exhibition “Beyond Homogeneity”, the museum wishes to reach out to new target groups which have a migration background. In cooperation with the Centre for Performance Studies at the University of Bremen, it is developing an educational programme featuring new formats for artist discussions, lectures and workshops. An extensive catalogue with theoretical reflections and a photo documentation will accompany the project.
