Conditions of Political Choreography

An exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel, the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein developed the exhibition “Conditions of Political Choreography” together with the Center for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv. The exhibition has featured performative artistic works which investigated the commemorative culture shared by Germany and Israel since 1990. How effective are our rituals of remembrance in times of seemingly endless conflicts in the Middle East and increasing anti-Islamic and anti-Semitic sentiment in Germany? The artistic works examined the relationship between Europe and the Middle East and reflected on how history and rituals of remembrance are viewed and cultivated in democratic societies. The exhibition architecture has been custom-designed for each of the two venues, enabling the curators to modify the space according to their needs and choreographies. The exhibition in Berlin has been accompanied by a film series and a conference on Israel at the HAU.
