Performing the City. Art Actionism in Urban Areas in the 1960s / 1970s

Exhibition, publication, film, presentation

Most of us regard the "city" as merely the lump sum of its static architecture. Performing the City is based on the concept that the "city" is actually a performative venue and is the result of public activities and social processes. From this viewpoint, urban areas become a place of action in which the city is continuously performed in new variations. This exhibition presented the performative art of the 1960s and 1970s, and in particular, its references to certain cities on various continents. Its spectrum included concept and action art, playful interventions and openly political art - a spectrum that tied in aspects of street theatre, political demonstration and action-based urbanism in architecture. The exhibition was supplemented by related films, discussions and an extensive publication featuring this non-material art form which cannot be found in any museum exhibition room.
