Pictoplasma: characters@war

Pokemon, Super Mario, the Michelin Man - all over the world, popular culture is characterised by little illustrated figures which combine condensed design with a high degree of expressiveness. The pictoplasma project has been collecting artistic adaptations of these "characters" since 1999 - today its online archive includes figures by more than 600 international artists. For characters@war, these 2-D characters have entered the third dimension as papier-mâché sculptures in an installation depicting Altdorfer's Renaissance painting "Battle of Alexander at Issus".
