Radiance of Glass

Masterpieces of contemporary glass art in the Naumburg Cathedral

Xenia Hausner, Trilogie Kreuzigung, Bildarchiv Vereinigte Domstifter

The interest in stained-glass painting has grown steadily ever since internationally acclaimed contemporary artists like Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Markus Lüpertz and Neo Rauch have designed their own church windows. For the very first time in Germany, the exhibition “Radiance of Glass” in Naumburg offered a comprehensive view of the development of glass art in religious buildings from the last three decades. The project was the result of close German-French cooperation and aimed to display the large range and high quality of contemporary stained-glass painting and presented the most important lines of development over the last 30 years as well as the most recent trends.

In addition to various glass objects, the exhibition featured original plans and related models by over 30 international artists. A symposium and lecture series with leading experts accompanied the exhibition, which has been documented and made available to the public in the form of an accompanying publication and website.
