Artistic landscape planning in the Vechte valley, Grafschaft Bentheim 2009-2011

Our environment is constantly changing. Public authorities and agencies often determine how landscapes are developed and designed for the long term. SPACEspectives [RAUMsichten] adds an artistic perspective to the process and goals of today's landscape planning which is so often motivated by economic or technological interests. The Vechte valley provides an ideal environment for this kind of project. With the district of Bentheim on one side of the Vechte River and the Dutch province of Overijssel on the other, the valley is already the venue of "kunstwegen" - an open-air museum featuring contemporary sculptures embedded in public space.
SPACEspectives develops this successful concept out. An international advisory committee had invited artists to develop concepts for artistic projects for public display in landscape areas. A jury chose eight artistic proposals which are completed and exhibited in the Vechte valley by 2011. Meanwhile, representatives and policymakers in public administrations and planning boards will discuss larger landscape design projects with the invited artists.
