Since it was founded in 1972, the “moers festival” has become one of the world’s most influential festivals of contemporary music. It serves as a stage for musicians around the world who go in search of new forms of expression beyond the musical mainstream into cross-genre areas of jazz, improvised music and world music. In recent years, we have seen a number of interesting large-scale musical groups which are completely redefining the term “big band”. For this reason, large-scale jazz formations have been the main focus of the 2014 festival. With bands like the Avi Lebovich Orchestra from Israel, the French Orchestre National de Jazz, the Finnish Ricky Tick Big Band, Fred Frith’s Gravity band from the US and the David Kweksilber Big Band from the Netherlands, the festival presented a diverse cross-section of contemporary big-band sound. These “Big Line-Ups” have been the first performances to inaugurate the recently renovated Moers Festival Hall.
